The Montessori Approach
The Montessori approach was founded by Maria Montessori (1870-1952) who was the first woman doctor to graduate in Italy in 1896. Dr Maria Montessori developed an educational philosophy based on developing the whole child holistically, physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually.
The Montessori approach creates an environment that builds childrens confidence and develops their love of learning. The Montessori approach creates an environment that gives children the opportunity to learn at their own pace and they are educated as individuals. The system assists children to develop and educate themselves toward their revealed and growing potentials, in agreement with their own nature.
A distinct feature of the Montessori method is the didactic materials that are self-correcting. The didactic materials are self-teaching materials that help children in the process to give children the chance to discover on their own at a pace that they are comfortable with. The manipulation of didactic materials encourages children to focus and reflect on their actions. Children embark on a journey of discovery that leads to concentration, motivation, self-discipline, and a love of learning.
Montessori stated that only when a child loves and desires learning can she or he grow intellectually and emotionally, for these attributes of humanity are tightly bound. Whatever is presented to a child must be accurate, beautiful and complete, to fulfill the enduring standards of justice, aesthetics and truth.
